San Francisco’s Moscone Center Roars Back
With more than 40 huge events booked for 2022 so far (nearly matching its pre-pandemic 2019 total), the expansive George R. Moscone Center is set to carry on another busy year as San Francisco’s marquee global event space.
After the closing its doors to meetings in March of 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Moscone Center was more than ready when it reopened in September 2021 for large meetings, conventions, and conferences.
Moscone Center has a well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s most elite, important, and active conference venues. According to SF Travel:
Meetings are a major component of San Francisco’s $10.3 billion tourism industry. In 2019, Moscone Center hosted 49 conventions and spending by the convention and meetings industry accounted for $1.9 billion, more than 18% of the total tourism spending in the city.
The Moscone Center Expansion
The Moscone Center is accredited by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council’s 20 GBAC Star program and recently completed an eye popping $550 million expansion. The renovation and expansion pushed Moscone into the highest caliber of event facilities of its type, adding:
- Almost double the amount of contiguous space for meetings and exhibitions than it previously offered
- More than 504,000 square feet of meeting space
- Two ballrooms, one of which is over 50,000 square feet with no columns
- 107,000 square feet of pre-function lobbies filled with light and offering dramatic views of Yerba Buena Gardens and the city
- 82 different meeting rooms
- Over 25,000 square feet of outdoor terrace space
As if the floor plan wasn’t already impressive, Moscone Center has also earned the highest LEED certification possible, thanks to a wide range of sustainable features, including:
- The recovery of millions of gallons of groundwater each year to use to irrigate neighboring parks, clean the streets, and more
- Zero-emissions electricity
- Daylight harvesting, which will offset the electrical lighting
- The most expansive rooftop solar panel array in the entire city
In addition, Moscone Center produces fewer carbon emissions per delegate than any other major convention center in North America.
A Prime Event Venue in a Prime Location
Moscone Center strives to be the premier conference location in the United States for exhibitors, employees, meeting planners, and business attendees who need an exceptional event experience. It offers a range of amenities for visitors, including access to several public transit options.
Located at 747 Howard Street, Moscone is ideally located in downtown San Francisco near restaurants, hotels, shopping, parks, bars, and more. It’s easily walkable from places like Chinatown, the Theater District, the Financial District, the Children’s Creativity Museum, Yerba Buena Gardens, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Hibernia.
Moscone Center’s premium location near The Hibernia is a convenience that offers event hosts, corporate planners, wedding organizers, and anyone else managing an event a unique opportunity. Since Moscone Center is just a short walk from The Hibernia, the latter often hosts and accommodates breakout meetings and events that are related to larger conventions and conferences that take place at Moscone.
In addition, The Hibernia’s historic roots and elegant architectural flourishes offer a refreshing change of pace from the contemporary Moscone Center, which often suits the theme and style of breakout events meant to elicit a different, more “Classic San Francisco” vibe.
